How to give effective and helpful cues to our clients. We talked about this last time, but we are diving in a little deeper to continue fine tuning our cues!
Why it’s important: The ultimate goal of good cuing is to ensure that members are in the correct posture to avoid injury, and so they don’t feel lost in class. Inadequate instruction increases the chance that someone will get hurt and will leave the members feeling frustrated not knowing what to do. That’s why our True-Cueing is so important to get them in the correct posture before they get moving!
Remember to hit all 5 phases of True-Cueing!
1. Call it: Calling out the name of the posture alerts members which posture is coming up next. This step prepares the veteran members to head straight to the posture, while giving new True40 members a visual aid.
2.Set it up: Only give enough information to get the client into the posture without beginning actual movement. Say 3-5 main cues to set up the posture as quickly as you can.
3. “HOLD”: Say the word “HOLD” so that they know that is where they will start the movement.
4. Kinetic Cueing: Start the kinetic cueing at the base of the kinetic chain (start where most of your weight is). Focus on cueing joints / muscles, moving in a natural progression up or down the body depending on the kinetic chain.
5. Movement/Modifications: Find the beat, and cue your movement. Then, provide modifications.
This sets our clients up for successfully completing the exercise safely and effectively!
